Plausible Artworlds is a collaborative initiative that aims to provide a platform for examining and accompanying the emergence of plural artistic environments. This comes in context of ever growing numbers of art-related practices both requiring artworld settings different from those currently on offer, and proactively involved in bringing them into existence. Artists’ ideas about, and experiments with, alternate artworlds will be made accessible through a series of 50 weekly email broadcasts and live events, culminating in an online and printed publication.

How do art and organizations mix? Sometimes not very well, sometimes too well. This course will take an in-depth look at the history of critical examples such as the Artist Placement Group and associated histories of similar groups and projects which have made moves to encourage short or long term working cross-disciplinary relationships between artists and the sciences, industries and other organizations. How do we work with entities that could swallow us whole?   How would an artist fair creating in a corporate environment as 'artist in residence'? How can social critical artists avoid confronting the most dominant forms of social groups (corporations)? What groups are we already part of or connected to one way or another?

Let’s have some open topic, brainstorming sessions about Plausible Artworlds. This is proposed as a non-curated extension of Plausible Artworlds ideas, not necessary drawing on the specific example mentioned each week but driven by the interest of the people that show up. We could explore more examples of Plausible Artworlds not mentioned during the weekly Tuesday night chats (people have suggested so many examples it’s bewildering… and exciting). Through games and exercises we could consider creating visual webs that outline potential, plausible and realized connections between extended communities exploring like and tangentially connected creative work. The group will try to meet face-to-face, but will also keep a laptop open to connect with people from wherever you happen to be.

We can explore the works of Etienne Wegner and Seymour Sarason, for example, ideas of 'Community of Practice" and 'Situated Learning'.  What sort of concludions has Sarason made regarding social and environmental scenarios in schools and how they effect the learning process?

In an effort to facilitate extended pedagogical efforts, courses are proposed weekly on The Public School website, informed by Plausible Artworld discussions.  Plausible Artworlds is a an ongoing event which  collects and shares knowledge about alternative models of creative practice.  The project currently operates as  a weekly public potluck hosted at Basekamp (http://basekamp.com) in Philadelphia.   More information can be seen at http://www.plausibleartworlds.org.

This class will research  radical networks, how established and developing communities for example squatted social centers, intentional communities, artist groups, etc. can interconnect.    One movement worth exploring are the squatted social centers, House Magic and culminating research presented by Alan Moore at Basekamp on January 19th 2010.  How does highlighting such activity and the formation of a database aid the continual development of social centers?
